Where is the perfect place to build a castle? Castles were homes to lords, ladies, and their families. However, castles were also strongholds (forts).
If the castle was attacked, it served as the base for the fighting men who lived there. Knights rode out from their castles to do battle and hurried back to their castles in times of trouble.
So, where did people build a castle? In a place that was easy to defend. From a high hill, people inside the castle could see their enemies coming from far away and could get ready for battle. Land near a river or lake was also a good choice, because the water was harder for attackers to cross. But any high place was better than flat ground.
