The heart is the only organ that has its own international holiday.
Every February 14, sweethearts send each other cards, candies, and flowers. It’s been going on since about the Middle Ages. But the holiday dates back to ancient Rome. February 14 was a feast day. It was also the date that lovebirds supposedly began to mate. Then it became St. Valentine’s Day, though it’s not very clear how it got that name.
The heart is important to life, love, and happiness around the world. It is part of our songs, our poems, our language, and our customs.
