The Great Depression was bad. But along with it came the worst agricultural disaster ever in the United States.
In 1931, drought (a long period of dry weather) and dust storms began to ruin the Great Plains. They didn’t end until 1939. The area once called America’s breadbasket, because of all the wheat grown there, became known as the Dust Bowl.
