More people. More gold. More everything! All those new people needed services, homes, food, goods, jobs, and more.
As thousands went to the gold fields, others started businesses to meet the needs of the growing population. Some became farmers who grew food for all the hungry people. The Gold Rush economy meant opportunities for minorities and women. Many other places did not offer such opportunities. These new Californians changed the economy and society.
