Crossword:
George Washington Carver
If you remember George Washington Carver as someone who was all about peanuts, you – and your kids – are in for a surprise. Orphaned as an infant, Carver grew up to become a significant agent of change, improving the lives of poor sharecroppers throughout the South.
This Unit unlocks the strength of character, determination, dedication, intelligence, and creativity that enabled Carver to overcome whatever obstacles he faced to achieve his goals and more, including testifying as an expert before the U.S. Congress. As natural sociologists, kids will vicariously experience the racial prejudice of Carver’s times and come to appreciate how he handled it.
Those with a budding interest in science will appreciate Carver’s research process and how he was able to apply what he learned to revolutionize farming through crop rotation. Future educators will appreciate the different approaches Carver used to share new techniques and strategies with farmers in the field. And those with artistic leanings will come to appreciate that creativity in art and creativity in science are anything but inconsistent! The historic photographs in this Unit and excerpts from speeches and writings will give kids a deeper understanding of the reality surrounding Carver’s life in the early 20th century.
