People have seen shapes in the stars all through history. When we look up, we might “see” a great bear or a mighty hunter.
These shapes are called constellations. They’re groups of stars that make a pattern such as a bear, a lion, or a scorpion. Long ago, cultures all around the world “invented” constellations. Some of these cultures were the Mayans, the Egyptians, and the Chinese. Sometimes they made up the same constellations! The stars we see are all in the Milky Way. They’re light-years apart. But to us on Earth, they look like a set.
