Ants can lift over 20 times their own weight! One elephant can carry more than a thousand pounds, and two horses can pull more than a ton. But we have something animals don’t have. Ancient problem-solvers gave us machines. They increase the force we can apply to objects. That lets us do things we could not do on our own. We can do a lot with just six simple machines. These were invented thousands of years ago. They have few or no moving parts. Every day, we use objects that combine them in different ways. Life would be very different without them.
