Earthquakes can be deadly, but can they wipe away an entire city?
Yes. That happened on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus in A.D. 365. But no one found out about it until 1934—over 1,500 years later! The huge quake hit at dawn while most people were indoors. Next came a deadly tsunami, moving at about 500 miles per hour. Thousands who lived in the city of Kourion and in other parts of Cyprus just disappeared. In 1934, American archaeologist J. F. Daniel dug up the remains of a Roman house. He found debris, parts of collapsed building, and skeletons. As years passed, other archaeologists joined in digging up this lost city.
