Cultural Development and Diversity in California
Travel through California and you’ll find different cultures and traditions at every turn. In this unit, kids come to understand how the state became so diverse, beginning with a look-back of more than 150 years.
It all began with the Gold Rush, which drew people from the East and from Mexico, China, and Japan. Kids will appreciate how newcomers brought all sorts of knowledge and skills. They will also want to explore how discrimination made their lives difficult.
As the 20th century continued, the state’s potential seemed endless. Industries, like oil, grew rapidly. The opening of the Panama Canal in 1914 brought more ships to the new harbor in San Pedro and more people to Southern California. But hard times followed. Kids will explore the effects of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl on bringing people to California. Readers will want to learn about The Grapes and Wrath, John Steinbeck’s famous novel about a family’s struggle on their journey to California. Kids from diverse backgrounds may have particular interest in events connected to members of their ethnic group, while all students will want to know the effects of the 1965 Immigration Act and the 2005 Apology Act. In spite of the severe discrimination and internment of people of Japanese descent during World War II, California continues to be a popular destination for immigrants, and home to many famous people. Ever heard of Walt Disney? John Wayne? Elizabeth Taylor? They all lived or worked in California, making residents proud of their home state.
