Bonjou. Sak pase?
If you go to Haiti, people there might greet you with these words. “Bonjou” comes from the French bonjour, which means “good day.” French is an official language of Haiti. “Sak” and “pase” are Creole, another official language of Haiti and the one most Haitians speak every day. Sak pase? means “What’s up?” Haitian Creole is a blend of French and West African languages. Other islands have their own Creoles, or language blends. The word creole also refers to the special culture of the Caribbean islands, which is a blend of the many cultures that have crossed there. Creole comes from the Spanish criollo, meaning “locally raised.”
