Butterflies and moths are the movie stars of the insect world. Most other six-legged creatures seem drab next to them.
Butterflies and moths may look fragile, but they’re actually pretty tough. And they can be dangerous. Some have bright colors that tell predators: Look out—I’m poisonous! Others fly like acrobats to stay away from hungry jaws and beaks. As caterpillars, some species eat up important food crops or even whole forests.
On the other hand, butterflies and moths help make spring happen. They pollinate flowers. And they change from plain caterpillars into pretty adults. This makes them symbols of hope and rebirth.
