Much of Australia’s wildlife is unique. Two unusual kinds of animals found in Australia are marsupials and monotremes.
Marsupials are mammals that carry their babies in pouches on their bellies. Australia’s most famous marsupials are koalas and kangaroos. Plus, Tasmanian devils and the rabbit-eared bilbies. Monotremes are mammals that give birth to their young by laying eggs. The platypus is a monotreme. Visitors to Australia’s many wildlife parks and reserves soon learn that the Land Down Under is a place like no other.
