Western Asia is a huge mix of places and cultures, but it divides into four geographic regions.
One is the Arabian Peninsula, which is mostly desert. North of the peninsula is the Fertile Crescent. This region, which passes through many countries, is where some of the world’s earliest civilizations began. The northernmost area is the Caucasus. You might guess that the main physical feature of this area is the Caucasus Mountains. You’ll also find grassy highlands, plateaus with shrubs, and swampy forests in this region. The fourth region is called Anatolia. Most of Turkey is here. It is marked by mountain ranges in the north and east, fertile coastal plains in the south, and dry highlands in the center.
