- from American Government
Let's say you're a member of a sports or chess club, and the club has some extra money it wants to donate to an organization or a charity.
To decide on the recipient, you'll probably vote, and the charity or organization with the most votes will receive the money. That’s how democracy works—people decide things by voting. The United States government is a democracy. That word comes from two Greek words—demos, which means “people,” and kratos, which means “rule.” It literally means that the people rule.
