How do eight ships burning in the English Channel in July 1588 relate to India?
Those eight ships helped the British scatter and then defeat the Spanish Armada. Victory over Spain in this fateful battle granted Britain the right to trade with India. Up until that point, only Spain and Portugal had had that right. With India’s markets now open, the British began over 300 years of influence and control in that region. India would become their largest and most profitable colony.
