Before you were born, the Inca conquered your village. Seven years ago, the eleventh Inca emperor died. Since then, your dad has been forced to fight in the civil war.
Now the war is over, and the winner, Atahualpa, is headed to the capital to become emperor. You hope your dad will be coming home soon.
You and your older brother are out fishing one day when you see what looks like floating houses on the sea. When they reach the shore, you see they are actually very big boats. Tall, pale people are on them. You don’t know it yet, but these strangers have come from Spain. They will change your world, and not in a good way.
Within a year, the Inca emperor is dead, and the pale people have taken over. Your dad never made it home. The strangers’ guns and diseases have killed many people in your village. You and your family have to work hard for the strangers and you even have to practice their religion. You thought life under the Inca was hard, but things are even worse now.
