Many African kingdoms are gone.
But the Ashanti kingdom is still here. It’s located in what is now Ghana. In 2014, the ruler of the Ashanti people threw a big party. His name was Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II. He was celebrating 15 years of being king! Their first great leader, Osei Tutu, began the Ashanti empire about 400 years ago. Legend says the god Nyame sent a golden stool down from the sky. Nyame made Osei Tutu the stool’s guardian. He told the Ashanti people to unite behind Osei Tutu to build a great empire. Today, the golden stool is still important. The king proudly shows it off and tells the kingdom’s history.
