When you think of a work of art, what do you see in your mind’s eye?
A painting? A sculpture? Something carved from wood? An article of clothing? A piece of pottery? Can art be an object that also has a function or must it exist only for its own sake?
People may disagree about the definition of what art is. But few will disagree about the variety, sophistication, and creativity of the art created by the people of Africa. World-renowned artist Pablo Picasso said it precisely, “I have felt my strongest artistic emotions when suddenly confronted with the sublime [superb] beauty of sculptures executed by the anonymous artists of Africa.”
