These creatures may look like lizards, but they’re not. They’re not even reptiles. They’re amphibians like frogs and toads, but they’re neither a frog nor a toad. They’re salamanders!
Like all amphibians, salamanders are animals that live on land and in water. Most of the more than 700 kinds of salamanders live in the shady areas of forests, often near a pond. Some live in and near water found in dark caves. Other kinds of salamanders live mostly on land. Still others live only in water.
