You might think of ants as pesky little critters you brush off your arms or legs at a picnic. But ants have us humans beat in ways that might surprise you.
First, they beat us in sheer numbers. There are about 20 quadrillion ants on Earth. That’s about 2.5 million ants for every person! They also beat us in the number of different species, or kinds. We humans are just one species. Experts estimate there are between 12,000 and 20,000 different species of ants.
