Light can do a lot more for you than just help you see. It’s also the main ingredient in many high-tech gadgets.
Switch on a lamp, and scattered light fills the room. Turn on a laser, and a tiny, powerful beam shoots out in a straight line. In addition to medical procedures such as eye surgery, lasers can show how straight a tunnel is, measure how far the ground moves in an earthquake, cut through layers of cloth, and much more.
