Some inventions make a job easier or allow more work to be done more quickly or cheaply. The automobile did all that and more.
Few inventions have altered the lives of Americans so greatly. The automobile changed how people got to work and how they relaxed. It affected where people lived, worked, played, ate, and shopped. It helped turn American roads from muddy gravel into paved highways. Over time, it led many Americans to move from the cities to new homes in the suburbs.
