What it Took to Build the Walls

Rammed earth was the material used to build the earliest walls, including the Qin Wall. In the hangtu method of wall-building, soil was put in a wooden plank mold, one layer at a time. Laborers then pounded each layer with a stone attached to a wooden rod. Walls made of soil containing a lot of clay were the best for resisting erosion.
