Crossword:
Early 20th Century in the U.S.
So many things kids take for granted have their roots in the early 20th century – electricity, telephones, radios, lightbulbs, even the motors that power cars and planes. In this unit, kids take a step back in time to see historical photos of these innovations.
Here also is a chance for them to dive into the development of automobiles and its connection to the growth of cities. Photos of the Model T and an early assembly line bring the narration to life. At the same time, kids get to know President Theodore Roosevelt, who led the country in becoming a powerful world leader.
With growth and development came corruption. Kids may discover valuable lessons as they investigate the mechanisms of the reform movement as told through the words and political cartoons of the time. They will want to get to know Black reformers, such as W.E.B. Dubois, Booker T. Washington, and Ida Wells. Then fast forward to World War I, where history buffs can explore the events leading up to America’s involvement in the war and the war effort at home. Visually oriented kids will enjoy the images of authentic memorabilia, such as dog tags, gas masks, and medals. Politically aware kids will enjoy taking in facts about postwar events, like the beginning of the League of Nations, the suffrage movement, and the start of worker unions. The early 20th century was a rich and eventful time kids won’t want to miss.
