Clara Barton
Clara Barton was no ordinary 19th century woman. A model of strength, intelligence, determination, and grit, she was a role model by any calculation. Here, kids take a deep dive into Barton’s life, from a childhood with few playmates to an adulthood of accomplishments still known and very much relevant today.
Most kids are familiar with the International Red Cross. Here, they’ll discover that Clara Barton not only brought the organization into existence, but served as its president for 23 years, leading teams of Red Cross workers to people in need throughout the world. Kids will also explore many of Barton’s other experiences and accomplishments, from her work in the battlefields of the United States during the Civil War through the assistance she provided during European conflicts of the time.
Future social historians will come to appreciate her role in aiding the struggles for women’s rights at a time when few American women had careers much less leadership positions. At the same time, general history buffs will enjoy the many images of primary source documents, including photographs of Clara Barton and her family, etchings of important events of the time, and early 19th century images of Washington, D.C. The unit also includes valuable information about events during Barton’s lifetime. Highlights such as Nat Turner’s Rebellion, the California Gold Rush, the invention of the ice cream soda, and the Wright brothers 1903 flight are just a few point of information in an illustrated time line. It’s all here, in Clara Barton.
