In the spirit of lifelong learning, Kids Discover, with the help of educational consultants and professionals, proudly encourages educators to share their expertise with our 2021 Cross-Curricular Contest. In creating this unique lesson planning contest, our goal is to reward elementary and middle school educators for creating and sharing engaging interdisciplinary lessons for the classroom.

How to Participate

1. Open the below Google Doc Lesson Plan Template
You can either (A) make your own copy of the lesson plan to edit on Google Docs (must be signed in to Google). Or you can (B) download the Google Doc and edit it on your computer.
2. Fill in the lesson plan.
Each submission should include information on the “big idea” of the lesson, acquisition of knowledge and skills, the learning standards that the lesson addresses, a step-by-step learning plan, and an assessment plan.
3. Ready to submit?
Upload your sharable Google link or PDF document to our submission page by 10/15/2021. The winners of the contest will be announced later this month.

Judging
Lessons will be judged by a panel of six educators and educational thought leaders. A detailed judging rubric can be viewed in our instructions. Let's meet the judges!

Christina Edmondson
Christina is a K-3 Reading Interventionist, with an emphasis on the “Science of Reading.” What motivates her is finding accessible ways to help struggling early readers.

Danielle Ruff
Danielle is a 5th Grade Teacher, Math Lead, Teacher Mentor, proud Teacher Pay Teachers Author and Blogger! Her education philosophy stems from encouraging unique learning styles to thrive through practice and customized lesson planning.

Jen Jones
Jen Jones is the Founder & CEO of Hello Literacy, where she develops high impact workshops to boost reading comprehension. Also a veteran teacher, with 28 years of experience, she received her Masters in Reading & Literacy.

Kevin Butler
Kevin is a 5th Grade Teacher, and K-6 Curriculum Director. In his 19th year of teaching, he likes to share his extensive experience through professional development, presenting and tutoring.

Nicole VanTassel
Nicole is the founder and CEO of iExploreScience, a professional development provider and three-dimensional teaching hub with a focus on student-driven experiences and inquiry-based learning. She values phenomenon-based science instruction, in which students gain knowledge through hands-on exploration and discovery.

Sarah Poquette
Sarah is a devoted 1st grade teacher, with a passion for social media within the education space. Also a youth basketball coach, she finds great reward in helping students build resilience and discipline through sport.
Terms and Conditions
At least one resource from Kids Discover needs to be included. By submitting the lesson plan, you are giving permission to Kids Discover to share and distribute your content. A link to our privacy policy can be found here. Lesson plans must be appropriate for use in grades 3 - 8.
Judging is out of 100 points and criteria and point allocation can be found in our instructions. Judges will consider clarity, creativity, practicality and originality of each section in the lesson plan outline.
The contest is limited to residents in the United States. Rhode Island residents are excluded from participating in the contest.
