It was a day like no other. People of a certain age recognize the day by the date alone – 9/11 – no year required. This series of screens tells the story of September 11, 2001, carefully and thoughtfully. It begins with a moment-by-moment time line of the events, from the early-morning take-off of the three airplanes meant to carry out the attacks that day to President Bush addressing the nation that evening.
It includes quotes from eyewitnesses, including people who survived the collapse of the towers as well as frontline workers. It includes the backstory of events that led up to the day and memorials that keep the events fresh in our minds. And finally, it looks forward from that day to its long- and short-term effects on the United States, its residents, and the world.
Future journalists will want to spend time imagining how they might have “gotten the story’ from eyewitnesses and others at the time. Future historians may want to engage with older family members and other adults on the subject, comparing their points of view and recollections with those shared in this unit. And would-be politicians may want to imagine themselves in office at the time and construct an understanding of how they might have reacted to the events. These images and captions provide readers with primary source information about what may be one of the most significant national events of the 21st century.
