Kids Discover Online is very engaging and informative. The website is easy to navigate, colorful and appealing, and -- best of all -- so very full of interesting information. The Discover mode is fascinating. My only complaint (and this is tongue-in-cheek) is there's just too much to discover!Naomi S, Mother of 4

Summer Reading with Kids Discover Online
Long summer vacations offer kids much needed down-time, but unfortunately it’s also a time when students lose a lot of the reading skills they have built up during the school year. Studies have shown that some students lose about two months of reading proficiency during the summer. That’s why it’s so important to promote summer reading at home. Summer reading programs and challenges are a great way to beat the summer slide.
“We know that summer learning is a great way for folks to make significant changes in their communities,” said Monica Logan, VP of Systems and Programs at National Summer Learning Association (NSLA). “The question is, how?”
To get a better understanding of what your community can do to beat the summer slide, it could be a good idea to start by looking at some success stories. Each year the NSLA presents the New York Life Excellence in Summer Learning Award to schools and organizations with exceptional summer reading programming. For example, one summer, Chicago Public Library teamed up with the Museum of Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium, and Chicago public schools to engage 83,000 children to participate in a daily 20-minute STEM-based summer reading challenge.
The large-scale partnership took into account a huge population that needed a digestible and inexpensive way to keep up with summer reading and comprehension skills. The partnership with the museum and planetarium was also a way of building community participation and getting more tactile or visual learners involved.
“Summer creates a space for not only parents, but communities to think of ways to engage students in new ways, different, fun and innovative ways,” said Logan, who thinks that summer reading time should be a time for fun experimentation, rather than just a continuation of a normal curriculum.
“Making sure they return to school confident in their abilities as a learner is more than half the battle,” she said.
Setting your own child’s summer reading program into place shouldn’t be a chore. With Kids Discover Online, kids can access age-appropriate, visually engaging reading material at any time, anywhere, on any device. Just set aside a little time every day, and let them choose what they’re interested in. Our Discover Map is a great place to start, as kids can see all of our science and social studies subjects and dive deeper into what they’re interested in. Twenty minutes a day of summer reading will have an impact on your child's reading comprehension. In the car, in the shade at the pool, waiting in line… you’ll be amazed at the opportunities for summer reading throughout the day.
