If you had to make a list of all the ways computers affect your life, you’d probably need a computer to help you make it!
Computers crunch information. Supercomputers can multiply and divide at the rate of more than a billion calculations per second. They solve math problems that would take humans months or even years. In offices, they figure out how much workers earn and print their paychecks. In schools, computers store students’ records, keep track of media in the library, create class lists, and even function as textbooks. In some homes, computers control heat, light, air-conditioning, video cameras, and locks on doors and windows. In factories, computers run machines that produce everything from airplanes to zippers. In hospitals, they scan brains and locate tumors. Computers run phones, cars, trains, planes, and ships. You can’t even escape computers by leaving Earth. Computers keep spaceships on course and send information back to Earth. Computers have started an information avalanche. We can’t do without them!
